The 9th grade Language Arts curriculum at Garfield High School focuses on reading, discussion, and writing about world literature from India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. At the same time, students are studying the history of these regions in their World History courses, providing an interaction that deepens and enriches both studies and increases our students’ understanding of
specific cultures and people.

Our library is in great need of fiction that supports this Language Arts curriculum. As the librarian at Garfield, I see our students coming in search of these books. I would like to purchase four copies of each of the following books to support our students and their 9th grade Language Arts world literature curriculum:

Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane
Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
Jasmine by Bharati Mukherjee
Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz
Wife by Bharati Mukherjee

Except for Wife, these books are vailable at Amazon.com. Kaffir Boy costs $10.20, Power of One $10.17, Midnight’s Children $10.20, Jasmine $9.75, and Palace Walk $10.20. The total for a single copy of each of these five books is $50.52. Wife is out of print; good used copies are available for about $10 each from a variety of used book stores.

The total cost for this project comes to $278.40 including shipping and handling, tax, and 15% fulfillment.

Thank you for helping immerse our students in the literature of the world.
