The 9th grade World History curriculum at Garfield High School focuses on the history of Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Students study not only the history of each country, but also its economy, political system, culture, and geography. At the same time, they are studying the literature of these regions in their Language Arts courses, providing an interaction that deepens and enriches both studies and increases our students’ understanding of specific cultures and people.
Our library is in great need of trade books about specific countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America to support the World History curriculum. As the librarian at Garfield, I see our students coming in search of these books.
Follett Library Resources carries the books we need, books our students really like and use. Follett will provide the books completely ready for library use, with spine labels, barcodes, and all the other details that make them ready to put to immediate use.
The books cost about $30 each, and cataloging and processing adds about $2 each. There are 61 books on different countries that we would eventually like to acquire for our students’ use. As a start, we are looking for a donor or donors to help us buy books on 15 countries. The cost of this 15-book project comes to $552 including shipping and handling, tax, and 15% fulfillment.
Thank you for helping our students explore the world.
