Who are we and where do our families come from? As the librarian at West Woodland, I would like to help students learn about themselves by learning about their heritage. An enlarged and improved selection of country and culture books in our library would allow them to do that.
The families of West Woodland have their roots all over the world. While we have some books on geography and culture, there are few and many are old. The average title in our history and geography section is 15 years old. The world has changed greatly in 15 years, and our insights into and knowledge of cultures and history around the world have increased immeasurably. I would like to be able to replace and increase our collection of country and culture books to make them current and more reflective of our student population’s heritage.
I would also like to open the stories of their heritage to all our students by stocking our shelves with a variety of books suitable for both our younger students and our older students.
By ordering from three series of books: What was it like, Grandma by Millbrook Press, Fact Finders, Question and Answers by Capstone Press, and Our Cultural Heritage by Child’s World Press, we can provide a wide range of appeal for both younger and older students. Focusing on the most prevalent heritage groups in the school, and aiming toward a mix of levels, I have chosen 25 titles I would like to buy for our library. Fourteen are more appealing to K-3, and 11 titles are aimed at 3-6 grade. The titles represent eighteen different cultural groups.
The price for 25 books from Follett Library Resources is $460.50, for a total project cost of $529.58 including shipping and handling, tax, and 15% fulfillment.
Thank you for helping the students of West Woodland celebrate themselves by learning more about where their families come from.
